All You Need to Know About The Music Business FAQs
Is it an easy read?
Even though it is a huge book, it’s actually really easy to read. It’s lighthearted and down-to-earth. Most large reference books like this one generally feel dry and scholarly.
Is it up-to-date?
At the time of writing this, it is extremely up to date. In fact, there was a reference to a new mechanical licensing organization called MLC which hadn’t even opened for business yet. So yes, it is very relevant.
What did you not like about this book?
Because this book is so exhaustive, it fails to fully expand on any given topic, which is to be expected. You’ll get a great overview of most every topic in the music business. For example, after I read the publishing section, I felt I needed to pick up another book on the subject to dive deeper.
Grab a copy of this super helpful book!
I think if you run an independent record label or if you are an indie musician, this is an important reference book for your bookshelf.
There’s no pressure to read it all at once, just keep it nearby for when various issues arise. This book will help give you a cohesive overview of nearly every subject in the music business.
