How to Prepare a Music Release: 5 Essential Strategies Artists Need to Know
Most artists focus all their energy on finishing the song.
Very few spend enough time thinking about what happens next.
The truth is, a great release isn’t just about the music — it’s about how that music is introduced, positioned, and sustained over time. Without a clear plan, even great songs get lost.
Here are 5 Essential Strategies to help you prepare your next release properly.
1. See the Release as a Campaign
A release should never be a single moment or singular initiative.
It should be a series of connected moments that build awareness, create anticipation, and extend the life of your music.
This means thinking in phases:
Pre-release (tease and build curiosity)
Release (deliver and activate your audience)
Post-release (sustain attention and reinforce the message)
When you treat your music like a campaign, you give it multiple chances to reach people.
Mimic movie campaigns or political campaigns…. think of the many ways they embed their story and their branding into various cultural touchpoints and platforms (social media, ads, print, in person events, etc).
2. Give Yourself a Long Runway
One of the most common mistakes artists make is rushing.
They finish a track and want it out immediately. Which is natural, but their labels need to make sure there’s lift or this thing is going to fall out of the sky…
But strong releases take time:
Time to prepare content
Time to build awareness
Time to reach out to collaborators, DJs, and curators
Spacing things out allows your audience to become familiar with the release before it arrives — which dramatically increases engagement.
Great labels allow for 2-3 months for singles, 3-6 months for EPs, and 6-8 months for albums.
3. Give Your Release a “Hook”
If your audience doesn’t understand why your release is important, they won’t engage with it.
Every release needs a clear, simple idea behind it.
This could be:
The impetus of the songs? (inspiration, motivation)
An overarching theme
A unique creation process (live off the floor, written and recorded in a week)
Something sonic like the instrument combinations or a unique genre
The image/message of the artists (costumes, reunion, last album)
Clarity is what makes your music shareable. The simpler and more focused your message, the easier it is for people to connect with it. What is the story?
4. New Releases Promote Your Back Catalog
Your new release is (sadly) not the main character…
It’s one of many future and present opportunities to bring attention back to everything you’ve already created.
When someone discovers your music, they don’t stop at one track — they explore. This is one of the great things about today’s streaming model… fans can deep dive your catalog for no extra cost.
Make it easy for them to:
Find your previous releases
Understand your sound and identity
Go deeper into your catalog
Every new release should act as an entry point into your broader body of work. This is great news for the label and the artist, it takes the pressure off of this new release!
5. Always Know What’s Next
A release should never feel like an endpoint.
It should be a part of a longer narrative. As I mentioned, your newest release is a gateway into your backcatalog. But backcatalogs take time to build and they are made up of your previous releases and the future releases you have planned.
Whether it’s another single, an EP, a full album, or a live experience… know what’s coming next for your label and for the artist.
This creates continuity, builds anticipation, and keeps your audience engaged over time.
For better or for worse, today’s music fans have a more rabid appetite for new music. Gone are the days of a new release every 5 years. Fans expect continual engagement with the artists they love.
Always be planning your next release, don’t sit back to celebrate for too long… know what’s coming next.

Conclusion:
Artists who build momentum aren’t just releasing music.
They’re building fans.
When you approach your releases with intention, clarity, and consistency, each one builds on the last — and over time, that’s what creates real growth.
