Here’s why I think record labels still matter in today’s music industry…

Record labels are not necessary! But guess what? Neither are record stores! We can order records directly from artists or Amazon, but for some reason, we still see a place for record stores in our lives.

The same goes for records and tapes; we don’t need physical media, everything is accessible digitally.

My point is that, of course, record labels aren’t necessary, but that doesn’t mean that they aren’t valued.

Not every independent artist enjoys being independent. Some artists don’t want to do it all themselves. A lot of artists want to focus on the creative parts and loathe the business side of making music. And that’s what makes for a great record label partnership!

Some of us do enjoy the business side of music. Some of us lie awake at night trying to figure out how to get on more playlists or how to help an artist get discovered on TikTok. A great record label and artist relationship becomes like a marriage, where both parties value one another and what each person brings to the relationship.
