5 Hard-Learned Lessons from Signing Artists to an Indie Label

Signing a new artist is exciting. It’s also a big responsibility.

Over the years, I’ve made some great signings... and some not-so-great ones.

Here are 5 lessons I’ve learned — sometimes the hard way — that every indie record label should keep in mind before signing a new artist.

1. Make Sure You Actually Like Their Music

Sounds obvious, right? But it’s easy to get distracted by other opportunistic or misguided feelings… Maybe they have a big following, great marketing instincts, or an influencer-like presence.

But here’s the truth: if you’re not a fan of the music, you won’t have the stamina to do the hard work that comes with releasing and promoting it.

💡 Ask yourself: Would I still support this music if I had no financial stake in it?

2. Check for Shared Values and Expectations

Do you like them as a person? Do you work in similar ways? Are they expecting you to do everything, or are they hands-on collaborators?

If you’re not aligned on goals and communication styles, things will fall apart — fast.

💡 Tip: Have an open convo about what they expect from a label — and what you expect from an artist.

3. Outline Your Plan

What does your label actually do for artists? Be honest and upfront. Share your vision for their release — and why your label is the right fit.

Maybe you’re great at vinyl. Or Spotify strategy. Whatever it is, spell it out clearly.

💡 Tip: Map out a basic release plan before your first meeting. It shows you’re intentional and organized.

4. Start Small (One Project)

You don’t have to go all in right away. Think of your first project together as a trial run.

A single, an EP, or even a re-release can be the test that tells you whether it’s a good fit.

💡 Tip: Consider the first release a mutual “trial run” — no pressure, no lifelong commitment.

5. Put Everything in Writing

Even with friends — especially with friends — you need to write things down. At the very least, email threads are great. Just keep a mutual journal of your plans, expectations, and promises! Trust me!!

Misunderstanding and mis-remembering royalties, responsibilities, and timelines can ruin a great partnership.

💡 Tip: Create a simple deal memo. Plain language. Non-binding. Just enough to avoid surprises later.
