Before You…
Start a Record Label

5 key things every independent record label should be aware of.

Thinking about launching your own indie record label?

Starting a record label is exciting—but it's also a long game. Whether you're planning to support your own music or elevate your local scene, it's important to approach this venture with thoughtfulness and intention.

In this guide, I lay out five key insights that will help you launch stronger, avoid burnout, and build something that actually lasts.

1. Delay Your Launch

Resist the urge to launch right away. A rushed release often leads to burnout and disorganization. Instead, give yourself 6–12 months of prep time.

Use that time to plan, build your release pipeline, and gather resources. You’re not just releasing a record—you’re building a label.

“Give me six hours to chop down a tree and I will spend the first four sharpening the axe.” — Abraham Lincoln

2. Research and Admire

Study other labels you respect. Look at album spines, explore genre-specific scenes, reach out to indie label owners, and collect inspiration.

Read, listen, and watch everything you can. Your future label is shaped by the stories you study today.

“To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment.” — Ralph Waldo Emerson

3. Keep It a Secret (for Now)

Avoid broadcasting your label plans too early. Keep your idea close—this prevents premature pressure and protects your enthusiasm.

When you do launch, the surprise will make a bigger impact.

“Work hard in silence, let success make the noise.” — Frank Ocean

4. Guinea Pig Yourself

Start by releasing your own music or a close friend’s project. Learn the ropes in a forgiving environment. Don’t aim for a high-profile artist right out of the gate.

Grow your label alongside an artist who is at the same stage in their journey.

“Failure is simply the opportunity to begin again, this time more intelligently.” — Henry Ford

5. Break the Rules

The most successful indie labels are the ones that ignore the “rules.” Your label can be anything—a record label tied to a coffee shop, a youth program, a university, or a specific genre or community.

You don’t need to follow the typical album-single-vinyl formula. Design your own path.

“You have to learn the rules of the game. And then you have to play better than anyone else—or make up your own game.” — Albert Einstein

In Summary:

  1. Before starting your record label:

  2. Delay your launch to plan properly.

  3. Research and admire the labels that inspire you.

  4. Keep it secret while you build in peace.

  5. Guinea pig yourself and learn with low stakes.

  6. Break the rules and build something new and true to you.

Remember—you don’t have to do it all at once. Take your time, gather your resources, and create something meaningful.

Starting a Record Label

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1: What does a record label actually do?

A record label helps artists record, release, promote, and distribute their music. Labels may handle marketing, physical/digital distribution, sync licensing, A&R (artist development), and sometimes even touring support. The scope depends on the size and goals of the label.

Q2: Do I need to register my record label as a business?

Yes—eventually. While you can start informally, registering as a business (e.g., sole proprietorship, LLC, or corporation) helps with contracts, taxes, and credibility. It also allows you to open a business bank account and manage income legally.

Q3: How much money do I need to start a record label?

It depends on your goals. You can start small with just a few hundred dollars—especially if you're digital-only. Budget for artwork, mastering, distribution, and marketing. Physical releases like vinyl or cassettes will require more upfront investment.

Q4: Do I need a lawyer to start a label?

Not at first—but it helps. For basic operations, you can use contract templates and self-education. As your label grows, consulting a music lawyer for artist agreements, licensing, and intellectual property is a wise move.

Q5: How do I find artists for my label?

Start with your existing network—friends, local acts, or artists you already admire. Go to shows, browse Bandcamp and SoundCloud, and reach out respectfully. Many labels start by releasing their own music or that of close collaborators.

Q6: What platforms should I use for music distribution?

Use a digital distributor like LANDR, DistroKid, TuneCore, or CD Baby to get your music on Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon, etc. For physical media, work with pressing plants, local duplication services, or on-demand vinyl services.

Q7: How do record labels make money?

Revenue typically comes from:

  • Streaming and digital downloads

  • Physical sales (vinyl, CD, cassette)

  • Sync licensing (film, TV, ads)

  • Merchandising

  • Live events and ticketed releases

  • Publishing (if you also handle publishing rights)

Q8: Should I start a label just for my own music?

Yes, many artists start labels to release their own work. It offers creative control and builds a foundation for signing other artists in the future. Just make sure you're willing to put on the "business hat" when needed.

Q9: Do I need to press vinyl to be taken seriously?

No. Vinyl is great, but it's expensive and not always necessary. Digital releases are cost-effective and can still be impactful. Many successful indie labels focus solely on digital or cassette formats, depending on their audience.

Q10: What makes a good record label?

A clear vision, consistency, trust with artists, and a commitment to quality and community. It’s not about how big you are—it’s about how well you support your artists and connect with your audience.
