“How to Submit Your Music to a Record Label—Without Getting Ignored”

Submitting your music to a record label can feel like a huge step… And it is!

But too often, indie artists rush into it without thinking through how their submission is being received.

In this article, we’ll explore five things artists should keep in mind before hitting “send” and how label owners can better manage submissions too.

1. Be Super Targeted With Your Submissions

Don’t go scattershot. Pitch to labels that are relevant—not just musically, but aesthetically, ethically, and culturally. That doesn’t mean you need to sound like the rest of their roster, but your style should feel like a natural fit.

Random, impersonal submissions won’t get you very far. Be intentional.

2. Be Organized and Respectful

Your email doesn’t need to be long. In fact, shorter is better. Save the bigger narrative for later. Instead, your pitch should include:

  • A stream link to your music

  • A short, personal (non-AI) intro

  • A few quick details about the project

  • (Optional) A name drop or career highlight

And above all, be respectful. No assumptions, no arrogance. You’re asking for their time and attention—make it easy for them to say yes.

3. Have Something to Offer

Labels aren’t interested in vague dreams or “just checking in.” Have a clear project to present: a single, EP, album… something real. Even better, let them know if you’re prepared to invest in your release financially or have other resources lined up.

Labels want to partner with people who are already taking their music seriously.

4. Start the Process Super Early

If your album drops next month, it’s already too late. Most labels are planning months (sometimes a year) in advance. Give labels time to actually work with you.

If you're looking for a fall release, start pitching in the winter.

5. Ask for Something

This is the tip that gets missed the most: have an actual ask. Don’t just tell your story and drop a link. What do you want? A vinyl co-release? A digital distribution partner? Help with PR? Make it clear. If you don’t propose something, there’s no reason for the label to follow up.

You’re not more likely to get a yes by being vague—you’re just more likely to be ignored.

Conclusion:
Submitting your music to a label isn’t about begging for attention.

It’s about making a clear case for why a partnership makes sense—for both of you.

The more intentional and respectful you are, the more likely someone will actually take the time to listen.
